Valentina & Daniela

"They epitomize the true essence of a successful and exciting friendship. Meet Valentina Hernandez and Daniela Moreno of Iron N Salt. The dynamic duo behind the Miami based blog that is introducing a new light on fashion and lifestyle in one of the most vibrant cities in the world."

What is your style formula?

Valentina: I always try to go for simple, classy with a touch of sexy. My main rule is always wear clothes that make you feel confident and in tune with your personality. Don't just wear something because everyone else if wearing it. (I also tend to stay away from color. My closet consists of black, white, and neutral colors.)

Daniela: Throughout the years, I have found that keeping everything simple makes for a more presentable look. So for me, I truly believe in less is more and I try to keep my color palette really neutral.

Did you have any childhood style icons?

Valentina: When I was younger, my style icons were definitely Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I thought they dressed so "effortlessly cool". Another childhood style icon was Kate Moss. I always admired her sexy badass attitude when it came to fashion.

Daniela: When I was in my early teens, I was obsessed with Rachel Bilson's style. I think because she was petite as well; I used her for inspiration in cuts and lengths for clothes. I remember reading Teen Vogue and I would cut out pictures that inspired me and make collages to hang in my room.

What is your beauty essential? One that you can't leave your house without.

Valentina: My beauty essential is probably mascara. You automatically look awake and fresh eyed with a couple swipes of mascara, even if you are not wearing anything else.

Daniela: I can't leave the house without lip balm. I carry so many in my handbag and reapply constantly because my lips get really dry. My favorites are the SUGAR ones from fresh and Baby Lips from Maybelline.

Is there anything in your closet that holds sentimental value?

Valentina: I have a couple of pieces in my closet that I haven't been able to get rid of even though I would never wear them again because they hold so much memories, such as my high school prom dress, and old Halloween costumes I made myself.

Daniela: I've kept some shirts from high-school days that I particularly remember having really fun nights in. There's a beaded blouse that all of my friends have passed around in the past eight years. Valentina is the current owner of it.

Daniela, you lived in NYC during your studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology. How does fashion in Miami differ from fashion in New York City?

Daniela: Living in New York was extremely influential to who I am today. It changed me in a lot of ways and the fashion in NYC really stuck with me. I think it will resonate for the rest of my life. I fell in love with wearing darker, neutral tones, and mixing edge with class. I used to wear a lot of florals and bright colors before living in New York. Now, I feel like I have created a personal style from what influenced me at FIT. Miami is known for vibrant colors and a lot of revealing cuts. I try to maintain a New York aesthetic and adapt it to the hot weather.

Some cultures tend to be a little traditional when it comes to their ensemble. Valentina, how has living in Switzerland and Beijing influenced your style?

Valentina: Living in Switzerland made me appreciate the beauty in simplicity and classic pieces. In America, people usually buy tons of clothes they don't need, instead of investing in a classic piece that will last years like they do in Europe. On the other hand, living in Beijing made me appreciate creativity in fashion and mixing pieces to make them more original. One thing that changed me after living in Beijing when it comes to fashion in my obsession with funky phone cases! Every girl in Beijing has a phone case that screams her personality and becomes a part of her outfit. Right now the case I've been loving is the Moschino French Fries.

What is number one on your travel bucket list?

Valentina: I've done a lot of traveling in Europe, Asia, and South America, but if you asked me the next place I want to go, it would be Palm Springs for the Coachella Festival. I have always wanted to go to Coachella and i feel that even though I live in the US, I still haven't explored as much as in other places.

Daniela: I have so many! I absolutely love traveling but my number one place would probably be to go on a safari in Africa. I think that would be such an incredible experience. I also want to explore more of South East Asia because I love the culture and all of those beautiful temples.

Top 3 places to visit in Miami

Valentina: One, Wynwood: This place is like no other place I've ever been to. Every wall is an art piece that you have to stop in your tracks and admire. The colors are full of life and every picture you take will be incredible. Not only is the art overflowing, but Wynwood also has a collection of cool bars and restaurant. Check out Jugo Fresh for you dose of health and Zak the Bake for some delicious bread. Two, Midtown: This is where I spend more of my time in Miamia because I'm a foodie and this is where my favorite restaurants are. Check out Mandolin to be transported to the Greek islands, Sugarcane to cry from the deliciousness of their bacon wrapped dates, or Gigi to get your fix of Asian flavors. Third, Bodega, South Beach: This is a relatively new club that has been an overnight sensation. Get some delicious tacos and then center through a secret bathroom to where the club is to dance the night away.

Daniela: For someone who is visiting, I would say Wynwood Walls for the art and the cool cafes, Collins Avenue in Miami Beach for that typical Miami Vice vibe and The Edition for a night out. That hotel has a bowling alley, an ice-skating rink, and a club, all in the basement of the lobby!

Favorite indulgence

Valentina: Going out for dinner to a great restaurant and enjoying some good wine and delicious food.

Daniela: I have the biggest sweet tooth and I can eat ice cream like no one I know, it's definitely a guilty pleasure.

What has been the most rewarding thing about running a blog with your best friend so far?

Valentina: Just when I thought we couldn't get any closer, we actually have with this blog! We talk all day long and we have fun creating contents together and dreaming of the future to come!

Daniela: I think that this idea had been something that we've been talking about for years but distance was always an issue since we've moved around so much. So, to finally have something out that we have worked so hard on and we feel like it depicts exactly who we are and the things we like is the most rewarding thing. I also think that our dynamic is great because we each bring something different to the table in terms of skills and visions. We never argue, instead we feed off each other's ideas and it's such a fun side project, as well!
